Mini split finder: match one to your room and your circuit

Four questions about the space, the power available and who is doing the installing. Every result shows whether its own numbers add up.

The finder searches every mini split in this corpus. It does not rank them by anything we were paid to prefer, and it does not hide a unit because its listing is incomplete — a unit whose manufacturer never published a SEER2 rating still appears, labelled not stated.

Your requirements

How big is the space?

Measure the room, not the house. Ceiling height, insulation, window area and which way it faces all move the answer — which is why a professional runs a load calculation rather than reading a square footage off a box.

What can you spend?

A ceiling, not a band — each option includes everything cheaper. Budget the install separately unless you are buying a DIY unit: a professional mini split installation is frequently comparable to the equipment.

What can you power it from?

A 115 V unit can often run from a circuit you already have. A 230 V unit needs a dedicated one, which means an electrician and a bill the listing never mentions.

Which refrigerant?

R-410A is being phased down in the United States and new equipment has largely moved to R-32 and R-454B. A unit still shipping on R-410A will work for years, and servicing it will get progressively more expensive as supply tightens.

I want to install it myself

Shows only units that advertise a DIY or pre-charged line set — no vacuum pump, no refrigerant handling, no EPA certification needed. A conventional mini split requires a licensed technician to evacuate and charge the lines.

How to read the results

The figure on the right of each result is the coverage area the manufacturer claims, and beneath it the percentage by which it differs from the median for its own room-size band. The specification row leads with the sizing check — the unit’s BTU rating divided by that claimed coverage. Around 20 is the rule of thumb. Well below suggests the coverage claim is optimistic; well above suggests a unit that will be oversized for the room it is sold for.

Below that sits SEER2 against the class median, because efficiency is what decides running cost and it varies widely inside every class.

Where a class holds fewer than 8 listings, no comparison is shown. That is a deliberate limit, not a missing feature.

This is arithmetic, not a load calculation. The sizing check is the unit’s own BTU rating divided by the coverage area it claims, against a rule of thumb of roughly 20 BTU per square foot. It tells you when a listing’s two numbers disagree with each other. It knows nothing about your ceiling height, insulation, window area, climate or which way the room faces — and all of those move the answer. Sizing a system properly is a Manual J calculation and it is a professional’s job.

Why incomplete listings still appear

Coverage across this corpus is uneven: a BTU rating is published by nearly every listing, a coverage area by about three quarters, SEER2 by rather more. A filter that dropped everything it could not confirm would discard a quarter of the catalogue the moment you answered the room-size question — and the units it discarded would not be worse, only less completely described.

So a filter here excludes a unit only when its listing positively contradicts what you asked for.

What the finder cannot tell you

It cannot size your room. Ceiling height, insulation, window area, orientation and how many people are usually in it all move the answer, and none of them are on any listing. It cannot tell you cold-weather heating output, because HSPF2 is published by too few listings to compare. And it cannot tell you what the installation will cost, which for a 230 V unit is frequently the larger half of the project.
