Abstract single thin line illustration in violet and pale lilac on white — decorative header for 115V Mini Splits Compared on Specs

Mini splits that run on a standard 115 V circuit

The units that can often run from a circuit you already have — which for a single-room installation can mean no electrical work at all.

Every figure here is taken from the manufacturer’s published listing and measured against the rest of the group. We do not install or test mini splits. Where a listing is silent, this site prints not stated rather than a plausible default.

What this group looks like

Computed across the 43 matching listings.
Measure Middle half Median
Capacity 12,000 BTU – 12,000 BTU 12,000 BTU
Claimed coverage 550 sq ft – 750 sq ft 750 sq ft
Sizing check (derived) — 16.0 BTU/sq ft
SEER2 19 – 20 19

The middle-half column spans the 25th to 75th percentile, so it describes where most of this group sits rather than being pulled about by one unusual unit.

This is arithmetic, not a load calculation. The sizing check is the unit’s own BTU rating divided by the coverage area it claims, against a rule of thumb of roughly 20 BTU per square foot. It tells you when a listing’s two numbers disagree with each other. It knows nothing about your ceiling height, insulation, window area, climate or which way the room faces — and all of those move the answer. Sizing a system properly is a Manual J calculation and it is a professional’s job.

Against the market as a whole this group claims about as much coverage per BTU as average — a median of 16.0 BTU per square foot against 16.0 overall. Lower means a bolder coverage claim, not a better unit.

What they cost

Bands, not prices — and the equipment is frequently the smaller half of the project once the circuit and the installation are counted.

This is the cheapest install on the site

A 230 V unit needs a dedicated circuit run from the panel, and on a long run to a far bedroom that is a real bill no listing mentions. A 115 V unit can frequently share or reuse an existing circuit, and for a garage conversion or a single bedroom that removes the electrician from the project. Combined with a DIY line set it removes both trades.

The ceiling is physical

A 115 V circuit can only supply so much current, which caps the capacity available at this voltage. In practice that means the class runs out somewhere around 12,000 to 18,000 BTU — enough for a bedroom or a modest living room, not for an open-plan floor. If the arithmetic says you need more, the choice is made for you.

Check the circuit before assuming

Existing is not the same as available. A 15-amp circuit already carrying lighting and outlets may not have the headroom for a compressor cycling on, and a dedicated 20-amp run is still cheaper than a 230 V one. The question is worth asking an electrician even when the answer is encouraging.

Why this class stops at a certain size

A 115 V circuit carries only so much, and that ceiling is why this class holds almost entirely smaller capacities. Above roughly 12,000 BTU the units in this corpus move to 230 V without exception. The voltage question and the capacity question are therefore the same question: choosing a room size above a certain point decides the circuit, and no amount of shopping changes it.

An existing circuit is not any circuit

Running at 115 V often means an outlet already exists; it does not mean the unit can share one. A mini split is a continuous load and generally wants a dedicated breaker even at this voltage — a smaller job than a new 230 V run, and still a job. A listing describing a unit as plug-in is describing the connector, not the circuit it belongs on.

What this class is good at

For a bedroom, an office, a garage conversion or a room addition, a 115 V unit is frequently the whole answer: it fits the load, it avoids the largest single line in a typical installation, and it overlaps heavily with the DIY units for that reason. The limitation only bites when the room is bigger than the class can serve, and at that point the honest comparison includes the electrician.

The refrigerant these ship with

Almost every unit in this corpus has moved from R-410A to R-32 or R-454B, and the small handful still on the old refrigerant are the ones that will be hardest to service in a decade. Both replacements carry a mild flammability classification, which brings rules about line-set routing and minimum room volume that R-410A did not have. For a unit going into a small room — which is most of this class — the room-volume rule is the one worth checking before committing.

Noise, and the figure that is quoted

Nearly every listing here states a decibel rating and the medians are low enough to sound implausible for an air conditioner. They are accurate and they describe the best case: the indoor head, lowest fan speed, at a set distance. The number that matters in a bedroom is the one on the setting that actually holds temperature overnight, which is not published, and the outdoor unit is a separate figure that most listings omit altogether.

Before you buy

Do not size up “to be safe”

An oversized unit short-cycles, never dehumidifies, and leaves the room cold and clammy while looking perfectly functional. Where the arithmetic puts you between two sizes, insulation and window area decide — and a load calculation decides properly.

Price the circuit, not just the box

A 230 V unit needs a dedicated run from the panel, and on a long route that can cost more than the difference between any two units here.

Treat marketing language as a claim

“Whole home”, “ultra quiet” and a square footage on a box are positioning. Look for the number behind each: a BTU rating, a decibel figure, a SEER2 value. Where this site could not find one, it says not stated.

Compare them

The finder below is already filtered to this group. Every result carries its sizing check.

Your requirements

How big is the space?

Measure the room, not the house. Ceiling height, insulation, window area and which way it faces all move the answer — which is why a professional runs a load calculation rather than reading a square footage off a box.

What can you spend?

A ceiling, not a band — each option includes everything cheaper. Budget the install separately unless you are buying a DIY unit: a professional mini split installation is frequently comparable to the equipment.

What can you power it from?

A 115 V unit can often run from a circuit you already have. A 230 V unit needs a dedicated one, which means an electrician and a bill the listing never mentions.

Which refrigerant?

R-410A is being phased down in the United States and new equipment has largely moved to R-32 and R-454B. A unit still shipping on R-410A will work for years, and servicing it will get progressively more expensive as supply tightens.

Any brand in particular?

Only brands with at least eight mini splits in this corpus are offered — a filter that returns three products is not a filter. Unlike every other question here, this one excludes mini splits whose listing does not name a brand: a seller who did not say who made it has not made a Della.

I want to install it myself

Shows only units that advertise a DIY or pre-charged line set — no vacuum pump, no refrigerant handling, no EPA certification needed. A conventional mini split requires a licensed technician to evacuate and charge the lines.
